Ask a longtime owner how many pickleball courts Pelican Cove has, and most will guess wrong. They'll say four, because that's how many lighted tennis courts the community has had since the buildings went up between 1975 and 1981, and tennis was always the racquet sport here first. The real number, according to the Global Pickleball Network's community directory, is six. Pickleball has quietly out-built tennis at a community that was designed around tennis. Nobody voted on this. Nobody announced it. It happened the way most real change happens in an established neighborhood, court by court, season by season, until one day the math has flipped.
That gap is worth pausing on, because it says something true about how Pelican Cove actually runs. Nothing here works quite the way a listing description suggests. The difference between a club that has been organizing its own tournaments for decades and a club still workshopping its rules on a discussion board is the difference between a finished institution and one still becoming itself. Once you start looking for that split, it shows up everywhere at Pelican Cove: in the courts, in the concerts, in the art shows, in a university that is already planning two seasons past the one that hasn't opened yet.
The Pelican Cove Condominium Association's own community rulebook describes the Tennis Club in a single, confident line: it organizes frequent tournaments that draw plenty of participants. That's the language of an institution that has done this so many times it no longer needs to explain itself. The club has had four courts and a full season's worth of routine since the community was young.
Pickleball has none of that settled shorthand yet. On the sport's own network platform, Pelican Cove's club members have been publicly working through the basics that tennis solved a generation ago, including whether to run a ladder system at all. One recent thread laid it out plainly: the club would try an optional pilot during December's advanced-play hours, gather feedback, and decide from there whether a standalone ladder made sense outside the existing advanced and couples play blocks. That's not a complaint. It's what a sport in its infrastructure-building phase actually sounds like, and it's happening on six courts, two more than tennis ever had.
If you're new to the community and wondering which racquet sport has the deeper bench of regulars versus which one has room for you to help shape how things work, the court count is your answer before you ever pick up a paddle.
Outside descriptions of Pelican Cove tend to flatten its music scene into one phrase, a classical concert series. It's actually two separate organizations with two different funding models, and residents who've lived here a while know the difference matters.
Pelican Chamber Concerts describes itself as an independent, board-recognized group within the community, built to bring in touring professional musicians from around the country and beyond for its Sunday-night series. That's a formal, sponsor-backed operation with a mission statement and a board.
The Stan Hendricks Jazz Group runs on something closer to a passed hat. Per the association's rules document, it's sustained by donations accepted throughout the year, funding special jazz performances and presentations rather than a fixed season of touring headliners. Both traditions fill the same clubhouses. Neither one answers to the other. If you've only been to one, you've only heard half of what residents built here.
The Annual Pelican Cove Art Show is the community's flagship exhibition, a weekend each March at the Pelican Pavilion and Harbor Club where photography, sculpture, watercolor, oil, and woodworking all get wall space, and residents wander through with a glass of wine while a classical soundtrack plays. It's been the anchor event for the Art Club's roughly 100 members for years, alongside a full calendar of painting demos and the annual Clothesline Sale, where every member gets a free table to display and sell their own work.
What most visitors miss is that there's a second, newer show layered on top of the first. The Annual Collaborative Art Show is produced jointly by the photography, art, and fiber arts clubs, and it works differently than a standard exhibition. A photograph goes up on display, and artists in the other disciplines choose that image as the starting point for an original piece in their own medium. A watercolorist and a fiber artist might both be responding to the same sunset shot of Little Sarasota Bay, and the show is the two results side by side. That's not a generic amenity. That's three clubs deciding, on their own, that their calendars should talk to each other.
The clearest evidence that Pelican Cove's institutions run on their own internal clock sits with Pelican Cove University. The program traces back to the early 1980s, when three retired professors started giving informal lectures to small groups of neighbors. That habit grew into a full curriculum, with more than two dozen courses offered most seasons on subjects ranging from Shakespeare to the Supreme Court, taught entirely by resident volunteers.
Here's the part that tells you how mature this institution really is. As of this writing, Pelican Cove University's own site states it is already planning its 2027 season and was collecting course proposals for it, with a submission deadline of June 1, 2026. That deadline has already come and gone. Which means that while the community's 2026-27 season, the one that opens this fall as snowbirds start filtering back into their units, is drawing on a course list that was assembled and locked in roughly a year ago, the organizers are simultaneously building out the season after that. Most volunteer programs struggle to plan six months out. This one is running two full academic years ahead of itself, on the strength of retired professors donating their time because they want to, not because anyone is paying them to.
None of this is abstract for anyone who actually lives here. As Sarasota's late-August humidity starts to give way to the first hints of a cooler fall and the community's population begins its slow annual climb back toward full occupancy, this is roughly the rhythm of what returns:
Underneath all of it are the details that don't show up on any club roster. The boardwalk out to the observation deck still looks over Little Sarasota Bay at the same hour every evening, and the dolphins that work the water near the fishing pier don't know or care what season it is. One longtime resident summed up the whole place in six words on the association's own site: "Pelican Cove is a feast for the senses." After a summer indoors, that's usually the first thing people notice again, right before they notice which of their clubs has changed since they left.
If you're weighing what a home in a community like this is actually worth, or you're curious how Pelican Cove's real estate market has moved alongside all this club activity, Judy Limekiller has spent years working specifically inside this community's six neighborhoods and can walk you through what's true right now.
