"Our objective is to create something that's aesthetically pleasing, ecologically friendly and a lasting benefit for the community," Michael Ansel told the Palmer Ranch Master Association for its July 2026 newsletter. Ansel lives in Promenade Estates and coordinates the project. He was describing a forest that volunteers started planting this summer beside a community pond near Honore Avenue and Bay Street.
The most-discussed changes around Palmer Ranch this fall are retail ones: Whole Foods, the Sarasota Square rebuild and a Trader Joe's. None of those has an announced opening day as of September 30, 2026. The microforest does have a schedule, set out in square feet, dollars and planting seasons, and so far it is on track.
The Promenade Estates Microforest Park uses the Miyawaki method. The idea is to plant a varied mix of native species very close together, which pushes them to grow quickly. According to the Master Association, a microforest planted this way can match the ecological benefits of a conventional 50-year-old forest within about ten years. Bay News 9 reported in June that the planting includes 60 different plant species.
The list of people and groups behind it is longer than you might expect for one pond edge. According to the July newsletter, the planting crew and funding came from:
Charles Reith is an ecologist from Mira Lago on Palmer Ranch and leads the stormwater task force. He told Bay News 9 that a full-grown, healthy tree can lift up to 100 gallons of water a day out of the soil and into the air. He also compared each tree to "a thousand umbrellas" because its leaves catch rain before it reaches the ground. Carol Auricchio of the Palmer Ranch Master Association put the street-level goal simply: "It will help take the flooding off of the street."
The plan also covers things you notice day to day. According to the newsletter, the finished microforest will screen traffic noise and views for Promenade Estates, replant land and water edges, and add a walking and running trail. The Association describes that trail as a benefit for Promenade Estates residents and has not published any visiting guidelines for the general public.
By the July newsletter, about 5,000 square feet had been planted, with another 5,000 square feet planned for later in 2026. Together, those two rounds cover about a third of the planting area around the pond. Promenade Estates expects to finish the rest by 2027, at a total cost of about $60,000. The cost and the one-year planting window match what the Master Association told Bay News 9 in June.
Here is how the microforest's timeline compares with the other changes coming to Palmer Ranch, based on the latest published information:
| Project | Latest stated timeline | Most recent source | Firm opening date? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promenade Estates Microforest | Second 5,000 sq ft later in 2026, rest of the pond area by 2027 | Palmer Ranch Master Association, July 2026 | Planting milestones set |
| Sarasota Square, Phase 1 | First quarter of 2027 | Business Observer, May 18, 2026, and Bay News 9, Aug. 28, 2026 | No |
| Whole Foods at Sarasota Square | Part of Phase 1 | Business Observer, May 18, 2026 | No |
| Trader Joe's, 8199 S. Tamiami Trail | "Coming Soon!" | Trader Joe's store page, current | No |
| Sarasota Square, Phase 2 | Complete in 2028 | Bay News 9, Aug. 28, 2026 | No |
If you followed the Whole Foods news last year, the date you remember is probably out of date. In August 2025, Your Observer reported that Phase 1 of the Sarasota Square redevelopment at US 41 and South Beneva Road would be delivered in 2026. In May 2026, the Business Observer moved that forecast to the first quarter of 2027, with no specific opening day for Whole Foods. Bay News 9 visited the site on August 28 and said Phase 1 will be finished "next year," with restaurants and shops open.
The Phase 1 tenants announced in November 2025 are Whole Foods, HomeSense, Charles Schwab, CAVA, Joe & The Juice and Chipotle Mexican Grill. In May 2026, the Business Observer reported that Warby Parker had recently signed a lease for a 2,040-square-foot store next to Whole Foods, bringing the first phase to 88% pre-leased. Bay News 9 described what follows Phase 1. Phase 2 brings a downtown-style center with green space, more stores and the site's first apartment building, and it is scheduled for completion in 2028. A third phase is in the master plan, but its details have not been finalized.
Mike Wayne remembers bringing his son to Boy Scout events at the old mall. He told Bay News 9 that the new center "won't be giant hallways and corridors." The same report said some people living in nearby Palmer Ranch communities are concerned about traffic and noise as construction continues over the next two years.
For now, the realistic plan for a Whole Foods trip is early 2027 at the soonest, and even that could change. Our spring post on the Palmer Ranch trail loop and the Whole Foods coming down the road covers that store's background.
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune confirmed in May 2026 that Trader Joe's will take over the former Staples at 8199 S. Tamiami Trail. That report did not include an opening date. As of this writing, the company's own store page still lists Unit #100 at that address as "Coming Soon!" with no date. Until that page changes, any date you hear around the neighborhood is a guess.
Closer to home, the family-run coffee and ice cream shop JavaCone was aiming to open at 5537 Palmer Crossing Circle in Palmer Crossing Shopping Center in early to mid-July, depending on county permits. Its website now has an online ordering page with that address. However, we could not find a dated announcement confirming that the shop has opened, so it is worth checking before you go.
Two road items are more concrete. FDOT now lists its Clark Road resurfacing project, a 0.44-mile stretch from Honore Avenue to just west of Gantt Road, as completed. The project had been expected to finish in mid-2026.
Sarasota County's closure schedule shows overnight FPL utility boring on Potter Park Drive, Sarasota Square Boulevard and McIntosh Road from September 21 through October 9, 2026, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. A separate overnight reclaimed-water-main job at Honore Avenue and Ranch Road was scheduled for September 21 through 28, so that work window has ended.
The Legacy Trail, which first ran 10 miles north from the Venice Train Depot into Palmer Ranch when it opened in 2008, has changed farther north. On March 31, Sarasota County opened a 1.5-mile, 6-foot-wide path for walkers and joggers alongside the main trail, between Shade Avenue and Beneva Road near the Sarasota County Fairgrounds. The county also extended the trail from the South Beneva crossing north across Fruitville Road to Circus Trail. If you start a long ride from a Palmer Ranch trailhead, you will reach the new pedestrian section once you get past Beneva.
The Promenade Estates planting is the first project encouraged by the stormwater management task force that the Palmer Ranch Master Association formed after the 2024 storm season. The Association invites other Palmer Ranch communities that want their own microforest to contact it for contacts and more information. Reith said a microforest "can fit into a surprisingly small space – an empty lot, a schoolyard, a church property, or even part of a backyard."
The next milestone is the second 5,000 square feet, planned for later in 2026. That puts it in the same late-2026 and early-2027 window as Phase 1 at Sarasota Square.
Keeping track of what is planned near your street matters whether you are staying put, adding a microforest to your own community's agenda or thinking about a sale next year. If you want to talk through how projects like Sarasota Square and the Clark Road corridor fit into your plans, Judy Limekiller is happy to help.
